Kigali vintage car show to attract regional exhibitors

The second edition of the Kigali vintage car exhibition slated at the end of this week is set to attract more automobiles not only from within the country but also from regional countries. Dubbed ‘Shyuha Auto Show’ the exhibition is slated for Saturday July 21 at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC) in Kicukiro District, the same venue for the inaugural show. The show attracts hundreds who enjoy car drifting, free rides and revving sounds of motorbikes and car engines. The first edition that took place in January this year was perceived as a success by both the attendees and the organizers who had pledged to add on more features to make it big and better. Paul Bakuru, the organiser of the festival told The New Times that some car collectors from Kampala, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam have pledged to come and showcase more vintage and luxury vehicles. “There will be more cars to be showcased than the last edition. We have got new sponsors for the auto show and more fun activities. But most especially, we will have many visitors from the region including car judges,” Bakuru says. He also calls on anyone who might own special vintage, pimped, luxurious customised cars and superbikes to bring them to the show as judges will determine a winner to get a cash prize. A 1959 Triumph Spitfire was the centre of attraction during the inaugural show held in January and was declared the oldest among all the cars on display. This miniature British two-seat sport car is said to be the only one in Africa according to the owner, Hassan Jammoul, a Lebanese living in Rwanda since 2005. Gildas Nsanzubukire, a well-known biker in Kigali says that some members of the Rwandan Diaspora are also coming to the show and will share tips with their country mates. “The setup will be quite different from the last one. Akagera Motors and other big auto garages will be on hand to share tips with cars lovers on how best to keep their cars. People will see different cars from this edition,” Nsanzubukire says. Organisers say that famous 1960’s German Volkswagen Beetle, BMW and Mercedes Benz will be part of the show, adding that this time around well-kept 1940s and 1950s cars are ready to impress. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
